Shap Quarry covers a 53-acre site near the village of Shap and has been in operation since 1950. It is the home of Shap pink granite, a widely-used decorative building stone.
The site yields two types of stone; light Shap primarily worked as aggregate whereas dark Shap tends to be used architecturally. One example of dark Shap construction is the historic Midland Hotel in Manchester. This high-grade material is worked traditionally with high demand presently for rock armour to build up the UK’s sea and river defences.
